General Description

Contains two treatises: Beiini Bixoli Mediolanensis … vite speculum and, by the same author, a Liber legum. There are also some monophonic Ordinary and proper pieces in chant notation and a motet. The motet Ave regina celorum / Mater innocencie / [Ite missa est], published in PMFC XII no.37, has in the motetus text the acrostic 'marcum paduanum', permitting its attribution to Marchettus of Padua, author of the treatises Lucidarium and Pomerium. Gallo suggested (1974) that it might be associated with the consecration of the Scrovegni chapel in Padua in 1307, but this has not been universally accepted; it would place the stage of Italian notation that it represents considerably earlier than previously attested. Beck (1999) has made a more elaborate attempt to link the text with the programme of Giotto's frescoes.

This manuscript of Italian origin (see f.58v) written in 1325 of 'Prosdocimus de Citadella custos maioris ecclesie Paduane' contains two treatises: Beiini Bixoli Mediolanensis. . . vite speculum and, by the same author, a Liber legum. There are also some monophonic Ordinary and proper pieces in chant notation and a motet, probably copied shortly after 1325. This is copied on 6 five-line systems per page in black mensural notation of the early 14th Century.

Notes - Margaret Bent: The motet Ave regina celorum / Mater innocencie/ [Ite missa est], published in PMFC XII no.37, has in the motetus text the acrostic 'marcum paduanum', permitting its attribution to Marchettus of Padua, author of the treatises Lucidarium and Pomerium. General Note

The motet was probably written for the opening ceremonies of the Arena Chapel on March 25, 1305 in Padua (Italy), famous for Giootto's frescos. The triplum contains Gabriel's salutation to the Virgin Mary (Luke 1: 28) while the duplum contains Marchetto's name.
