General Description

This volume and Bodley 241 are vols. 1 and 3 of Augustine's Commentary on the Psalms, to be found in the list of books read in the refectory at Reading Abbey. The codex is in fact a Reading MS. Both volumes were presented to the Bodleian by William Burdet of Sonning near Reading in 1608. Fol. i and 195 are 2 late 13th century musical flyleaves containing three-part conductus, none of which are complete. Originally glued to the front and back cover (there are still traces of the music on the boards). These 2 flyleaves are actually double pages stuck in sideways, so that the original page size was c. 320 x 215 mm. (now cut down c. 20 mm. at original top margin).

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 13th century parchment manuscript meas. 412 x 295 mm. and containing iv + 195 folios. The binding of stamped brown leather over older reversed wooden boards is Reading work of c. 1500. The foliation by. G. Langbaine at t.r.r. is of 17th century brown ink, except for the flyleaves which have a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r. Fol. i and 195 are 2 late 13th century musical flyleaves containing three-part conductus, none of which are complete. Originally they were glued to the front and back cover, for there are still traces of the music on the boards. These 2 flyleaves are actually double pages stuck in sideways, so that the original page size was c. 320 x 215 mm. (now cut down c. 20 mm. at original top margin). The notation is generally of unmeasured Notre Dame type, although no. 2 differentiates between longs and breves. Typical of English sources is the English conjunctura. There are 12 brown five-line staves per page in 4 accolades of 3 staves each. The script is Gothic and the initials red or blue ; important initials have contrasting filigree. The remaining flyleaves are as follows : f. ii is a paper folio of the 17th or 18th century, f. iii and iv are old parchment leaves from the original ms, and f. 194 corresponds to f. ii.
