General Description

A reconstruction, following Fallows 'Drexel fragments', of fragments preserved as:

The 'A' leaves come from a choirbook-format manuscript; all the other leaves (B-H) come from partbooks. Despite a variety of scribal hands, on internal evidence FallDrex suggests that all the leaves B-H may have come from a 3-partbook set (Discantus, Tenor, Bassus), though Fallows does not press this conclusion. For the purposes of this reconstruction all the Discantus fragments are assumed to come from a single partbook.

This reconstruction therefore presents parts of 4 books:

  • a choirbook-format manuscript ('A' fragments). Note that at least 2 folios are missing between A1-5 and A6-8.
  • a Discantus partbook ('B', 'C', 'E', 'F', 'H' fragments)
  • a Tenor partbook ('G' fragments)
  • a Bassus partbook ('D' fragments)

Several of the Drexel flyleaves have recto/verso reversed in Fallows' reconstruction of their order. The rectos & versos of the following leaves are therefore reversed in this reconstruction:

  • D.4180 rear
  • D.4181 rear
  • D.4183 front
  • D.4184 rear
  • D.4185 rear

Physical Description

All the leaves have been cut down, either for re-use as bindings or (possibly) to tidy them for presentation (FallDrex on the Cambridge fragment). The 'A' fragments are each half a page of a choirbook-format manuscript; the remaining fragments are each the remains of a page of a partbook.
