General Description

Two parchment sheets (evidently conjoined), with mensural notation written on four-line staves, which had been repurposed for use as front and back covers for seventeenth century vital records in Cogolin, Var, France. Concordances for the music preserved on these sheets were identified by Michael Scott Cuthbert. The front cover preserves the top voice of the final two-thirds of a rhythmicized version of the Credo Vat. I “du vilage”/“dominicale,” largely concordant with upper-voice material from the Zacara de Teramo setting, albeit an octave lower with note values doubled. (The Sanctus which follows it does not use mensural notation.) The back cover preserves a large portion of the topmost voice of the Credo from the Mass of Tournai. The upper-voice parts preserved in this source appear to have been copied for use monophonically, since the music on the verso of both sheets continues directly from that on the recto. Discovered by Richard Dudas. August 2021.
