General Description

Sixteenth-century partbook, possibly from Ferrara. All compositions are anonymous, but it contains a great number of pieces by Maistre Jhan. There is original ink foliation in the upper right-hand corners of the folios, running from 71 to 132, while all pages are ruled with four staves (of 11mm in height).

The manuscript shows scribal similarities to the work of Jean Michel. It also includes inscriptions and scribbles in eighteenth-century hands.

Eric Jas, 2021
Extent

Incomplete: Five folios seem to be missing (three at the beginning and two at the end).

Eric Jas, 2021
Physical Description

The book itself is made up of ten gatherings, and most of these consist of four sheets.

Eric Jas, 2021
Binding

(Possibly) original covers of brown leather over pasteboard, with (stamped) decorative figures and an inscription 'CON' and 'OR' - probably for 'Contratenor'.

Eric Jas, 2021
Ownership

Belonged to the Monastery of San Domenico in Fiesole in 1748 (according to inscription on first page of book).

Purchased in Paris in the first half of the twentieth century by the uncle of the present owner.

Eric Jas, 2021
Watermark

Not traceable, as it occurs in the sew fold - but of the type listed in Piccard (see bibliography)
