General Description

Copied at Toledo cathedral, the work of a single scribe - named in payment accounts as Alonso Gascon - and compiled as a single unit, though with at least three discernible sections copied apparently at different times.

Binding

Originally bound in black calfskin decorated with crimson velvet beneath corner brackets (inventory 1649); now in wooden boards covered in tooled brown leather, from an undetermined date after 1649. Five large brass studs & numerous smaller studs on each cover.

Related to, but different from, the version published posthumously in Navarro's Psalmi Hymni ac Magnificat (Rome 1590). Whereas the published setting is laid out 'cum tribus choris' (setting every third verse polyphonically, namely verses 3, 6, 9 ... 29), the Toledo version is for two choruses, setting every second verse (verses i, 3, 5 etc.). Verses 1i, 7, 13, 19 and 25 in the Toledo version are unique. Material is shared between the two settings, with some reworking
