General Description

A bifolium (original sewing holes and fold of gutter confirm order of leaves), with a written space of 166 mm wide. Written in England. Used as a strip under a pastedown in an unidentified reverse-calf or stamped leather binding, probably of a book in the library of the Royal College of Physicians (cf. the marks at each end of the strip). The series of holes on fol. B and over the original gutter may suggest that the bifolium from which this strip was cut was used in an earlier binding, either as a pastedown or as a wrapper. Removed from a book in the College library, probably in the early 1950s, and placed in MS 777, c. 1983. Most of the College's early printed books were received from Henry Pierpont, first Marquis of Dorchester on his death in 1680.
