RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment Gradual from Hereford meas. 337 x 225 mm. and containing 142 folios. In addition, there are 2 blank unnumbered paper flyleaves at the beginning and one at the end belonging to the 19th century British Museum binding of dark brown leather ornamented with gilt arms on the cover and title on the spine. Also, immediately preceding the parchment at the beginning, and immediately following at the end, is one 18th century ribbed paper leaf (at the beginning with pencil foliation 1 * at t.r.r.; as f. 143-144 we have 2 quarto-size printed pages containing the ten commandments and the 23rd psalm in Arabic). Finally, f. 1 and 142 are original parchment flyleaves. The Gradual begins at f. 2 as the original f. xvii, and an original red foliation at t.m.r. runs from here to f. cxli. The main foliation is in modern pencil at t.r.r. The square plainsong notation is on 10 red four-line staves per page. Initials are red-blue or red-violet. Single notes have the English tendency to be all longs. The two polyphonic pieces both have the usual longs in the upper part and Ars Nova mensural notation in the lower one. In spite of the use of score notation, the text appears under both voices. It can easily be seen that a long in the upper part equals a semibreve of the lower one.
