General Description

A single folio, perhaps originally a single sheet, now a bifolium; bound as fols. 2, 14. Written space c. 105 x 223 mm; the script is gothica textualis rotunda. Written in England. Leaf incorporated in Egerton MS 2104A, a general cartulary of the Benedictine Convent of Wherwell, Hampshire, probably as the front pastedown and flyleaf in the first instance (see the marks made by two clasps, now lost, on fols. 2, 14,15 ff., not present on fols. 3-13), but later folded around the first gathering, which was added to accommodate a list of the manuscript's contents (fols. 3 - 13 + stub after fol. 13, written in in the 15th century; two letters to Henry VI and some visitation correspondence were added on fol. 14r-v after 1460). The main body of the cartulary (fols. 15 ff.) was written in the 14th century, after 1364. Owned by Charles, fifth Baron de la Warr, by c. 1649; the Iremonger family, Wherwell by c. 1832; and possibly by 1762 (Davis, p. 118; Egerton MS 2104B; MS 2104A, fol. 1). Bought from W. Cutter, 1869.

13, written s. xv in.; two letters to Henry VI and some visitation correspondence were added on fol. 14r-v after 1460). The main body of the cartulary (fols. 15 ff.) was written s. xiv ex., after 1364. Binding of white whittawed leather over oak boards without corner mitres, probably s. xiv ex. (repaired s. xix) ; clasp marks and what may be a chain hole appear in the front board. Owned: Charles, fifth Baron de la Warr by c. 1649 (see the catalogue of his library, 0b, MS Dugdale 48, fols. 54-64); the Iremonger family, Wherwell by c. 1832, and possibly by 1762 (Davis, p. 118; Egerton MS 2104B; MS 2104A, fol. 1). Bought from W. Cutter, 1869. I am grateful to Dr Daniel Leech-Wilkinson for drawing my attention to this source.

NOTES ON CONTENTS

1 Middle voice carries plainsong Sancta Maria non est tibi (similar to Hymni canori cum iubilo secundum morum ... ecclesie Eboracensis (M. P. Olivier; Paris, 1517/18), p. [7]) up a fifth. 2 Some losses, where obscured by the binding; ed. PMFC 17, No. 8. Also in Cu, MS Kk.i.6, fol. 246v, with a slightly different ending; middle voice carries plainsong Sancta Maria virgo (slightly different from AS, pl. 493).
