RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A mainly 12th-13th century parchment codex meas. 237 x 163 mm. and containing 91 folios. In addition, there is 1 extra original leaf at the front and 4 unnumbered paper flyleaves each end belonging to the Cotton binding. This is of 18th century brown leather with gilt tooling, the Cotton arms being represented on the front and back cover. The foliation too is mainly of the Cotton period and is in ink at t.r.r. An error has been corrected in modern pencil up to f. 25. The contents are psalms and hymns. Music is added at the end on the originally blank f. 90-91. On f. 91v are a score or so of lines from an Arthurian poem, also using up a blank page. The large Gothic script of the ms corpus allows room for only 12 lines per page, and is decorated with red or green initials and fine illuminations in various colours, including gold. The polyphony on f. 90 is a three-part Agnus Tro in score written on 12 four-line staves to the page. The bottom line is in the same hand as the sequence Salve, virgo singularis on f. 91, but both upper voices are in a clearer square notation, apparently by another hand using black ink. The date of the piece could be early 13th century.
