RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A parchment Sarum Antiphonal of c. 1300 meas. 292 x 185 mm. and containing 170 folios. There is no old foliation but a modern pencil one at t.r.r. At each end of the manuscript are 3 blank unnumbered folios. The codex was bought by the British Museum in 1871, and the dark, purplish brown morocco binding dates from this time. On f. 1-8v is an independent part of a commentary on Ecclesiasticus in fine script. The ms proper employs notation of square plainsong type with rhombs for breve-shapes on 17-19 red four-line staves per page. Initials are alternately red-blue and blue-red, except towards the end where they are simply black. The polyphony is a two-part lection, which may be compared with similar German settings in ErfB and GrB. In this case the Jube, domne formula is not included in the setting, and the voices move with great simplicity.
