General Description

The contents are a 10th century glossed version of the Psychomachia by Aurelius Prudentius (f. 2-38); Versus Hildeberti cenomanensis episcopi in expositionem misse, etc. (f. 39ff.) (12th century, like the rest of the MS); a verse life of St. Mary of Egypt, also by Hildebert, and other saints' lives by Marbod, bishop of Rennes (f. 56 ff.); a life of Mahomet by Hildebert (f. 82 ff.); in the latter part of the codex several other short pieces by Hildebert and Marbod. The flyleaf f. 1 at the beginning contains a fragment of Portius Azo's Latin commentary on Justinian's Codex, while at the end are 3 Sanctus. The annotations and headings throughout the MS are in an English 16th century hand. Originally from Bury St. Edmunds, the codex still bears the call-number of that library, P. 123. All 3 Sanctus settings are typical 14th century English compositions, with their three-part homophony, plainsong in the middle voice, and text from the Ordinary of the Mass.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A parchment manuscript meas. 317 x 232 mm. and containing 91 folios plus 2 unnumbered modern paper folios at each end. The binding is of modern brown leather, presumably over wooden boards, with a gilt title on the spine. A modern pencil foliation at t.r.r. replaces the 17th or 18th century ink pagination. Briefly, the contents are a 10th century glossed version of the Psychomachia by Aurelius Prudentius (f. Both flyleaves date from the 14th century. The annotations and headings throughout the ms are in an English 16th century hand. Originally from Bury St. Edmunds, the codex still bears the call-number of that library, P. 123. The polyphony is in Ars Nova notation on red five-line staves, originally 12 per page. The text employs blue and red initials. All 3 Sanctus settings are typical 14th century English compositions, with their three-part homophony, plainsong in the middle voice, and text from the Ordinary of the Mass.
