RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A parchment manuscript meas. 300 x 210 mm. dating from c. 1300 and containing 264 folios. A modern pencil foliation replaces the faulty modern ink foliation. Briefly the contents are a calendar with obits of many abbots and benefactors of the monastery (f. 2-8), a Psalter (f. 25-145) followed by prayers, responsories with musical notation (f. 149v-161v), the short treatise Modus psallendi in choro (f. 162-163), hymns with music (f. 166-206), tropes on Ave Maria in French and similar Marian invocations without the Ave Maria refrain (f. 233v-238). The codex originated in the abbey of Lire in Normandy, which had close connections with England. It is written in a Gothic script employing red-blue initials, sometimes ornamented with gold. The plainsong is on red four-line staves, while the 3 polyphonic hymns mainly make use of 10-line staves, though no. 1 begins with two 11-line staves. The notation is of undifferentiated square notes with ligatures and conjuncturas. Mensural features are hinted at occasionally. A modern binding of dark brown morocco over wooden boards bears a gilt title on the spine; 3 unnumbered modern flyleaves each end go with the binding.
