General Description

There is no mention of dimensions, etc in Knowles - the Bible is listed no. 2066 in the Short Catalogue of books printed...1475-1642, by A. W. Pollard and G. R. Redgrave (1926). Dart states that the music was copied by John Alcetur (= Alcester), sexton of the Abbey at its dissolution. There are 3 pages of music:

  1. reverse of the title page: 'O bone Jesu' for 3 male voices. On the same page is given the tuning for the 6 course lute.

  2. page before 'The Prophetes in Englysh': untexted polyphonic piece with the annotation by Alcester 'For the Regallus the Virginallus and the Dulcemers'.

  3. page before St Matthew's Gospel: (a) entitled 'Non exspecto' with an inscription that apparently reads 'For the Virginallus'. (b) The Trowmpettes'.

Dart tentatively dates the music as being early Elizabethan.
