RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A printed incunabulum, namely Trevisa's translation of Higden's Polycronycon published by Wynkyn de Worde in 1495, which contains a single parchment folio of music at the beg. as a flyleaf. This page, which meas. 260 x 179 mm., contains 11 red five-line staves on f. 1, and 10 on f. 1v. The bottom stave of the verso has been made into a six-line one (= in this case 2 three-line staves). The notation is typical of its period, namely the end of the 13th century, for ligatures are pre-Franconian even though longs and breves are clearly distinguished. The English conjunctura is a feature, and the first piece is also English in its use of rondellus technique, which is clearly hinted at by the use of different coloured texts for the three parts (blue, red and brown, reading downwards). The top stave is missing. The work on the verso is a motet, also in honour of St. Peter. Both Tr and Mot have an illuminated capital letter opening their respective texts and conclude with the T incipit In veritate (actually the text incipit to the T In veritate is missing).
