General Description

Used as a cover for other documents; the fragment is now preserved flat as a single leaf. There is also a small additional fragment apparently from the same original source, but probably not cut from one of these leaves. Several anonymous secular French songs are preserved, with Se vous estes by Guillaume de Machaut.

The outer face is rather grubby and rubbed but the music is still legible; the inner face is cleaner.

Ruling

at least 13 red five-line staves (the top stave is cropped) on the inner face, with four lines on the outer face of the larger part, and 12 lines on the outer face of the smaller leaf and 13 on the inner face. The irregular ruling, which includes gaps for blocks of text suggests that the pages were hand-ruled at the time of copying to accommodate the music to be copied into the gaps. Although the larger part preserves the full width of the rulings (in a slightly unusual tall, narrow format, which might imply that this is only half of a complete leaf, with the page trimmed down the middle blank margin), the smaller half is damaged on the fore-edge and some material is lost.
