General Description

Two hands, one of which was responsible for 1 and the other for 2 - 3, both writing a rough gothica textualis quadrata. Written space 290 x 215 mm. Written in England. Used to form a wrapper for a document, unidentified, but probably a slim book; later used as stuffing in the cushion of a chair, probably in the sixteenth century, in Machynlleth. Pen trials and other scribbles on the verso, originally the outside of the cover, include: 'Bernardus de bello campo vir religiosus ac timens deum vidit manifeste angelum dei dicens ...', 'Dominus est terra', 'Nihil facuisse noe- ... obloquium', 'cantumin ..., Et omnia ...' (alls.xv), 'The devylltake all' (s.xvi) and portions of the motet texts (verso). Given to the National Library of Wales, November 1991

English mensural, with paired rhomboid breves, diagonal stems on the first rhombs of conjuncturae, and dots of division in 1 ; unstemmed semibreves, without dot of division, used melismatically in 2 - 3.

Script: two hands, responsible for 1 and for 2 - 3, both writing a rough gothica textualis quadrata. Notation: English mensural, with paired rhomboid breves, diagonal stems on the first rhombs of conjuncturae, and dots of division in 1 ; unstemmed semibreves, without dot of division, used melismatically in 2 - 3.
