General Description

A Discantus partbook from a set of four volumes, each of which consists of the print RISM 1549/35 with manuscript additions. German sacred pieces appear at front of each book, preceding print; motets copied at beginning of section of mostly blank folios following print. Copied by Johannis von Schännis (KmetzJ). Copied in Zürich. Original owner and compiler was Johannis von Schännis (d. 1586), a prominent citizen of Zürich; Schännis purchased bound music print with additional blank folios in Speyer in 1578 (inscriptions in manuscript). Later owned by other members of Schännis family; passed to present library in 1629.

4 paper partbooks, each consisting of the print RISM 1549/35, with manuscript additions (D-3 folios before print + 25 folios after print, A-3 + 30, T-3 + 29, B-3 + 30), 132 x 191. Modern pencil foliation. German sacred pieces appear at front of each book, preceding print; motets copied at beginning of section of mostly blank folios following print. Original parchment covers cut from earlier manuscript. No index. Copied by Johannis von Schännis (KmetzJ). Staff height 12-13. A few inked calligraphic initials. Watermark resembles Briquet #918.
