General Description

Copied by one main scribe and several additional hands. Thirteen concordances with FlorBN BR 230 (JepBR); five pieces were probably copied directly from FlorBN Magl. 164-7, by the same scribe (Rifkin).

The manuscript falls into two parts, of strophic and non-strophic songs. The opening sections have 4 staves to a page with room for additional text strophes left between the middle two, and are written by the main scribe with a second hand adding two textless pieces. The second part is ruled differently (but with the same rastrum) for non-strophic pieces, copied mostly by the same two scribes but with a number of additional pieces, many by a third scribe who wrote FlorBN Magl. 164-7 (RifSC), and copied 4 pieces in the same order into both manuscripts.

Copied in Florence, probably by or for someone associated with the poet Lorenzo Strozzi (1482-1551), author of the texts of 26 pieces (D'AccT).

RISM B/IV 5: XVIe s., 100ff. (200 p.) + 2ff. de garde. Parchemin, 120 x 170 mm. Foliotation 1-100 et pagination 1-200 modernes au bas des ff. 2ff de papier ajoutés au début du vol. portant la liste des compositeurs et quelques concordances. Notation mesurée blanche. 4 (p. 1-120) et 6 (p. 121-200) portées par p. Initiales ornées. Reliure ancienne (restaurée) cuir estampé d'or.

Ce ms. de plusieurs mains (on peut en distinguer 5 ou 6) est entré à la Bibl. del Conservatorio en 1885 avec la donation Basevi. Il contient 56 pièces apparte-nant à la période de transition entre frottola et madrigal et a certainement été copie à Florence. L'étude de la biographie de certains compositeurs (B. Pisano, par exemple, né en 1490 ou F. de Layolle né en 1492) oblige à rejeter l'hypothèse de Gandolfi qui situait la copie à l'époque de Lorenzo il Magnifico, ou celle de Torrefranca qui jugeait le ms. «tipico del periodo savonaroliano», pour adopter une date plus récente: le recueil a été plus vraisemblablement compilé entre 1515 et 1525, le poète (Lorenzo Strozzi) et les compositeurs qui y sont le plus largement représentés ayant été particulièrement actifs à Florence durant cette période. Des taches d'humidité rendent malheureusement certaines lectures impossibles.
