General Description

A Tenor Cantoris partbook from a set originally of eight volumes. Copied for the choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. Items 1-68 represent the original layer, copied by Zacharie Irishe in c. 1643-4. In three sections: (a) services (items 1-28); (b) verse anthems (29-53); and (c) full anthems (54-68). Items 101-127 are anthems copied by Edward Lowe probably in the 1660s (item 121 is attributed to 'Mr Christopher Gibbons', and was therefore presumably copied before 1664, the year in which Gibbons was awarded his Oxford D. Mus). Lowe also emended item 7, replacing pages that had originally been copied by Irishe and were now damaged. Items 201-294 were copied by other scribes during the Aldrich era (i.e. from the late 17th century to c. 1710). Items 301-348 were copied from c. 1710 onwards. See Milsom for full details.

John Milsom, 2010
Foliation

two unfoliated leaves, used for indexes of services; 3 leaves of smaller paper (c. 330 x 200 mm), mounted on guards; paginated '1-6' in 18th-century ink; principal textblock, originally a maximum of 162 leaves, paginated by Irishe (with minor additions made in pencil in October 2007); the numbering sequence runs as follows: 1-245, 245a-b, 246-324, 283-4. (The sheet paginated as '283-4' was evidently moved to the rear of the textblock in order to accommodate the end of item 305.) The following gaps occur in the pagination sequence: pp. 201-4, 277-8 and 302-3; these gaps arise partly from the loss or removal of leaves, partly from apparent pagination errors. Followed by two unfoliated leaves, used for indexes of anthems. See Milsom for full details.

Decoration

No initials or decoration.

John Milsom, 2010
Index

Original index on front and back flyleaves of each book, with corrections and additions by several later hands; front index lists Services, back index lists full anthems and verse anthems. Modern index taped in at beginning of each book lists pieces in order of appearance, with attributions. See Milsom for full details.
