General Description

A Tenor partbook from a set originally of four volumes. The text-block appears to have been preceded by 2 flyleaves at the front (of which leaf i is partially torn out), and followed by 4 flyleaves at the rear (of which leaf ii is a torn stub, inscribed 'Edward Yonge his book'). Copied by three scribes. Some of the unused pages (ff. 16r-29v) were subsequently used by Richard Goodson Jr to notate organ scores. Items nos. 6-9 were copied from the rear, with the volume inverted. Presumably part of the Goodson bequest.

Contemporary binding of dark brown leather over boards, blind-tooled with fillets and ornaments on the covers, and fillets on the spine; the tools used to decorate this binding have not been observed in other bindings within the music collections at Christ Church

1 paper partbook (T-ii + 39 + iv folios), 250 x 198. New pencil foliation, 1-40, omits front flyleaves but includes first back flyleaf; incomplete original ink pagination. Blank staves only on ff. 15-15', 30-36, 37'-39; ff. 40-40' blank. Original covers of dark brown tooled leather on cardboard. Modern index pasted inside front cover lists all pieces in order of appearance. Copied by three scribes. Purcell Service (ff. 16-29') is organ part only, with figured bass and barlines; anthem by Child (ff. 36'-37) has treble and bass in score, with barlines. No initials or decoration. Music on ff. 36'-37 and f. 39' upside down, probably due to misbinding.

Ca. 1690 (DanS). Copied in England. Inscription on back fly-leaf: "Edward Yonge his book."
