General Description

Described in 1602 inventory as 'libro de Benedictus' - implying that all pieces are by Appenzeller, though half are anonymously transmitted. Copied in Brussels, at the court of Mary of Hungary (daughter of Philip the Fair and Juana of Spain), Regent of the Netherlands 1531-55. Copied by one main scribe; ff. 66'-90 copied by a different scribe, who also wrote MontsM 769, 771, and 776.

(GGTMontserrat however identifies 'at least' 4 scribes: (i) the scribe "a l'oiseau" ff. 1-48v, 91v-143; (ii) 'scribe II' ff. 48v-62; (iii) 'large letters scribe' ff. 62v-66; (iv) 'Mary of Hungary's scribe' ff.66v-90.)

Taken to Valladolid in 1556 following Mary's retirement to Spain; later moved to Guadalajara. Passed in 1558 to Mary's nephew, Philip II, King of Spain (1527-98); listed as #25 in 1602 and 1620 inventories of Philip's books. Purchased in 1620 by Real Convento de las Senoras de la Encarnaçion in Madrid; acquired from the Encarnaçion by Benedictine monastery at Montserrat, probably during 1920's.
