General Description

A set of small partbooks bound into one volume in order: tenor, quintus, cantus, altus, bassus. Copied by two scribes, one of whom was Cipriano de Rore. (Owens argues that the two hands are both Rore's & thus the whole ms autograph.) Possibly copied in Brescia (Jessie Ann Owens) as a sketchbook used by the composer Rore.

Brought to Ferrara in 1546 when Rore began serving at the court of Ercole II d'Este (1508-59). Manuscript given to Rore's pupil Luzzasco Luzzaschi in 1559; Luzzaschi presented it in 1606 to Cardinal Federigo Borromeo (1564-1631), Archbishop of Milan and founder of Biblioteca Ambrosiana. (Affidavit by Luzzaschi bound in at beginning discusses his acquisition of the manuscript).
