General Description

Polyphony on 21 folios comprising ff. 132-152 in modern compilation of five originally separate, unrelated manuscripts (i + 168 folios, with modern pencil foliation, 1-168). Each manuscript is collection of individual folios or small gatherings, each containing different voice part. Only ff. 132-152 contain repertory within scope of present catalogue; other items not taken into further account here. Folios now preserved loose in modern folder/box of mottled green-black cardboard.

Signature of Petrus Alamire on f. 132v. Ff. 132-152 from the workshop of Alamire (Nowak 1948); Warmington distinguishes the hands of Alamire and scribe K, with text added by scribes F and Y. The unusual layout of the sheets (see Physical description), their size, calligraphy and careful underlay suggest these may have been performing parts; although it is possible they were models for the use of scribes in preparing choirbooks or partbooks.

Copied in Brussels/Mechlin; belongs to Netherlands court complex (KellJ). Subsequently owned by Raimund Fugger the Elder (1489-1535), of Augsburg. Fugger library purchased by Emperor Ferdinand III and brought to Vienna in 1656.

Physical Description

Rectos of ff. 132-135 each have one voice of the Agricola motet; versos each have one voice of the Ghiselin motet. The staves are different sizes on the two sides, suggesting they were copied at different times. The following 12 folios form 3 sets of four, each with one voice part of the piece on recto only. FInally, the last five folios each have one voice of the 5vv piece, prima pars on recto and secunda pars on verso.
