General Description

The high original foliation of this fragment shows that it was once part of a much larger Codex. It survived as the front and back flyleaves of the incunabulum A. Spiera, Quadragesimale de floridibus sapientie, (Venetiis 1485). Discovered by Alberto Gallo, the two sheets are now kept separately. They transmit 2 Latin motets, of which the first four-voice piece survives complete; of the second, three-voice work only the beginning survives. The origin of the fragment is not known (the incunabulum, for which it served as cover sheets, seems to have changed owners many times) the text of the first motet - which contains a reference to Francesco Dandolo, Doge of Venice in the years 1329-1339 - suggests that the manuscript probably originated as early as the 2nd Quarter of the 14th Century.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 4: 14. Jh.; 2 Blätter Pergament, 210 x 170 mm. Originale Foliierung: f.

[Translation]14th century. 2 sheets of parchment, 210 x 170 mm. Original foliation: f. LXXXV and LXXXVI. The first page contains 9 five-line systems, the remaining three pages 8, with black notation, in keeping with the theory of Marchetto da Padova.

This fragment - whose high original foliation shows that it was once part of a much larger Codex - survived as the front and back flyleaves of the incunabulum A. While the origin of the fragment can hardly be known, since the incunabulum, for which it served as cover sheets, seems to have changed owners many times, it is clear from the text of the first motet - which contains a reference to Francesco Dandolo, Doge of Venice in the years 1329-1339 -that the manuscript probably originated as early as the 2nd Quarter of the 14th Century.
