General Description

Composite of two originally separate manuscripts, copied c1602-6 and bound together no later than 1645. Part I = first 79 folios; part II = last 188 folios. Part I and most of Part II copied by a single scribe, probably Gaspar Fernandes, chapelmaster and organist at Guatemala Cathedral 1599-1606, and at Puebla Cathedral 1606-29; same scribe also wrote GuatC 4, PueblaC 1, and ff. 37'-39' of PueblaC 2. Later additions in Part II by several other scribes. Copied in Guatemala City, for use by cathedral choir.

Deposited at the Archivo Histórico Arquidiocesano "Francisco de Paula García Peláez", Ciudad de Guatemala (GCA-Gaha). Requests for consultations should be directed there.

259 paper folios, 430 x 280. Manuscript is in two distinct sections: Part I - 79 folios, original foliation; f. 1, which probably contained an original index, is missing. This section contains hymns. Part II - 180 folios, original foliation, original index. This section contains Magnificats and motets. Covers of leather over boards. Six anonymous pieces in a much later style have been added on pages left blank at beginning and end of manuscript.17th century. Copied at the Cathedral, Guatemala City
