RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 380 x 280 mm. and containing 185 folios + two blank unnumbered paper folios at each end belonging to the 17th century brown leather binding, which has plain gilt tooling on it. The corpus of the manuscript is a Sarum Gradual in a single hand throughout. It contains a Proper of the Time (f. 1-110v), a Proper of the Saints (f. 111-145v), a Common of the Saints (f. 146-169), a Requiem Mass "pro fratribus et sororibus" (f.169-173), a Kyriale (f. 173-183v), and toni communes (f. 183v-184v). The binding, flyleaves and foliation presumably date from when the codex was acquired by the Biblioteca Palatina. The foliation is in brown ink at t.r.r., while the script of the manuscript is English Gothic with red rubrics. Red-blue initials are employed generally, but for particularly important ones, gold and white are used as well. A full page of notation contains 14 red four-line staves per page, and the notes themselves are of square plainsong type. The polyphonic work is a later addition of c. 1400 in black Ars Nova notation with white semiminims on black five-line staves. There are also two additional plainsong fragments on f. 184v, namely a Kyrie in a 16th century Italian hand on one red five-line stave and a psalm-tone in a 15th century English hand on three red four-line staves.
