General Description

A single Altus partbook. Copied in Rome. Once owned by Raffaele Casimiri (1880-1943); bequeathed to present library by Casimiri. Discovered in 1972 by Alexander Silbiger among uncatalogued items of Casimiri collection; present call number assigned in 1972.

RISM

XVIe s. 37ff. Papier, 180 x 243 mm. Une 1ère foliotation en haut des ff., ne tenant pas compte du f. limin.: 1-36, a été suivie d'une foliotation imprimée au bas de tous les ff.: 1-37. Dans la fol. ancienne, le f. limin., les ff. 6v, 10v, 11, 18, 28v, 36v sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 6 portées par p. Petites capitales ornées à la plume. Rehure carton gris-beige portant inscrit à l'encre: ALTUS et ΗΡAΚλΗσ. Partie d'Altus seul'.

Ms. légué à la Bibl. Vaticane en 1943 avec toute la bibliothèque musicale de Raffaele Casimiri (1880-1943), mais dont on ne connaît pas l'origine. Il est l'oeuvre de plusieurs scribes car on distingue à peu près 11 styles d'écriture, du gothique élégant avec notes losangées et initiales ornées, à la cursive rapide, avec notes arrondies et pas de capitales. Le ms. ne portant aucun nom d'auteurs, ceux-ci ont été rétablis d'après des concordances avec d'autres sources datant des environs de 1530, toujours postérieures à 1515 et le plus souvent italiennes. Il ne s'agit pas d'un ms. d'apparat, mais comme le suggère Silbiger, d'un recueil destiné à l'usage d'une chapelle privée vraisemblablement d'Italie, les pièces religieuses l'emportant avec 35 motets sur les pièces profanes qui (sauf 2 en latin, nos 17 et 27) sont toutes en italien. La copie a peut-être été exécutée par les chanteurs de cette chapelle dont quelques-uns des noms pourraient être ceux qui figurent au v du f. limin. et dont aucun n'est d'ailleurs jusqu'à présent connu.
