Commissioned by Nuremberg city council; prepared under direction of Friedrich Lindner (ca. 1542-1597), cantor at St. Egidien, and Hieronymus Paumgartner, Jr., council administrator for church affairs. Later passed to von Tucher family of Nuremberg, who placed it in Germanisches Nationalmuseum following Franco-Prussian War. Returned to von Tucher family in 1877, but reacquired by Museum in 1885.

Original covers of light brown tooled leather over wooden boards (modern spine), with brass clasps, edges, and bosses; modern leather ties. Front covers stamped with letter 'B,' date 'MDLXXIIII,' and medallion incorporating arms of city of Nuremberg and arms of Paumgartner family. Back covers stamped with representation of St. Egidien ministering to a wounded roe.

Nuremberg shield surmounted by coronet (generally resembles Briquet #916ff).
