General Description

Two antiphoners bound together, with an Ave, virginitatis flos in pedes muscarum and five polyphonic works added later as space-fillers on odd folios. From f. 214 to the end are in a rougher Germanic hand,, with rubrics often in German.

DIAMM, 2017
Binding

Brown leather over wooden boards, with probably 16th century blind tooling, and two clasps

DIAMM, 2017
Notation

Mostly Ars Nova. The five polyphonic pieces have single notes as heavy pedes muscarum (this applies to minims and semiminims as well as semibreves, though in the incipits given below, these notes are written normally). No. 5, is written in straightforward longs of normal square type throughout, but items 1-4 are either rhythmically corrupt or in a peculiar notation (the rhythmic significance of this awaits clarification). The breve is a long oblong note, whose rhythm is apparently often explained by the presence of two or more dots over it, while the minim occurs inverted as well as with the tail pointing upwards.

DIAMM, 2017
Ruling

8 or 9 red four-line staves per page (main part of MS); red four-line staves for polyphony, usually with an additional line in black (This is regularly described for items 1-4 as mutetus and tenor, though only no. 3 has different texts in both voices)

DIAMM, 2017
Foliation

Folios 81-214 have an original foliation 1-134 at t. m. r. (suggests that this volume consists of two antiphoners bound together)

DIAMM, 2017
Foliation

80v, 103v-104v, 164v, 172v

DIAMM, 2017
Surface

236 paper, 1 unnumbered parchment folio at each end, 5 empty unnumbered paper folios at the front and 2 empty paper folios at the end (numbered 237 and 238).

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century antiphonary of paper meas. 288 x 197 mm. and consisting of 236 folios. In addition there are the following flyleaves: 1 unnumbered parchment folio at each end (13th century regulae monachorum), 5 empty unnumbered paper folios at the front and 2 empty paper folios at the end (numbered 237 and 238). The fact that folios 81-214 bear an original foliation 1-134 at t. m. r. suggests that this volume consists of two antiphoners bound together. The binding is of brown leather over wooden boards, and looks of 16th century type, judging from the blind tooling. There are two clasps. The main part of the ms is written on 8 or 9 red four-line staves per page in black notation of square plainsong type. From f. 214 to the end the black ink shows a rougher hand and a clearly Germanic one, since the rubrics are often in German. Apart from an Ave, virginitatis flos in pedes muscarum, the other later additions to the ms are the five polyphonic pieces written as space-fillers on odd folios, again in a different hand but Germanic and with single notes as heavy pedes muscarum. This applies to minims and semiminims as well as semibreves, though in the incipits given below, these notes are written normally. This two-part polyphony doubtless dates already from the 15th century, for the notation is essentially of Ars Nova type, except in the case of no. 5, which is written in straightforward longs of normal square type throughout. Items 1-4, however, are either rhythmically corrupt or in a peculiar notation whose rhythmic significance needs further clarification. The breve is a long oblong note, whose rhythm is apparently often explained by the presence of two or more dots over it, while the minim occurs inverted as well as with the tail pointing upwards. An extra line in black is usually added to the four red lines of the stave for the polyphony. This is regularly described for items 1-4 as mutetus and tenor, though only no. 3 has different texts in both voices.
