General Description

A composite MS made up of liturgical fragments, dating from the 10th to the 18th century, many of them with music. Polyphony is found on a single bifolio; this contains motets such as those that appear in I-IV and CA 1328. Written in two columns. According to the 18th century writing on f.49v, the MS was formerly in the abbey of 'S. Sauveur le vicomte'. The 15th century writing at the bottom of f. 49 seems to refer to an exchange of land at nearby Coutances.

DIAMM, 2017
Physical Description

f. 48 is cut down at the top by about 20 mm., so that another folio number is doubtless lost

DIAMM, 2017
Binding

bound in large volume measuring 480 x 335mm. Green and beige mottled paper covers over pulp boards and a green parchment spine with a red insert bearing the gilt title 'MUSIQUE'. The flyleaves belong to this binding.

DIAMM, 2017
Notation

Ars Nova. Red notes appear on f. 48, as does the breve shape with a descending tail at the left.

DIAMM, 2017
Ruling

11 red five-line staves per page (12 on f. 49, if one counts the added half-line at the bottom of the page).

DIAMM, 2017
Foliation

numbered 48-49 in modern blue ink at t.r.r. (like the rest of the MS). An old foliation on f. 49 at t.r.r. reads f. i (or perhaps ij; if the latter, the 'j' is very faded).

DIAMM, 2017
Foliation

48-49v

DIAMM, 2017
Decoration

Initials are in blue or red or both. The two-colour initials on f. 49 suggest that this is the start of a new fascicle.

Surface

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A composite ms made up of liturgical fragments, many of them with music, dating from the 10th to the 18th century and meas. various sizes. The volume itself (1913-14 acquisitions) is a large one meas. 480x335 mm. and containing 110 parchment folios + 2 blank unnumbered paper flyleaves at each end belonging to the modern binding. This has black, green and beige mottled paper covers over pulp boards and a green parchment spine with a red insert bearing the gilt title "MUSIQUE". The polyphony occurs on a bifolio meas. 307 x 205 mm. and numbered 48-49 in modern blue ink at t.r.r., like the rest of the ms. These Ars Nova pages contain motets such as appear in I-IV and CA 1328. In other words, they date from c. 1330-1350. The two col. motet writing is typical of its period. Initials are in blue or red or both. Red notes appear on f. 48, as does the breve shape with a descending tail at the left. There are 11 red five-line staves per page (12 on f. 49, if one counts the added half-line at the bottom of the page). An old foliation on f. 49 at t.r.r. reads f. i (or perhaps ij; if the latter, the "j" is very faded). In any case, the two-colour initials on f. 49 suggest that this is the start of a new fascicle. However, it is unfortunate that f. 48 is cut down at the top by about 20 mm., so that another folio number is doubtless lost. According to the 18th century writing on f.49v, the ms was formerly in the abbey of "S. Sauveur le vicomte". The 15th century writing at the bottom of f. 49 seems to refer to an exchange of land at nearby Coutances.
