MODENA. Biblioteca Estense e Universitaria. MS a.M.1.11 (Lat. 454; olim V.H.11) and MS a.M.1.12 (Lat. 455; olim V.H.9) 4 Magnificats, 4 canticles, 65 psalms, 14 hymn stanzas (grouped as 8 hymns), 2 Passions, 1 motet = 90 Brebis-5, Martini-10, anon-75* *On stylistic grounds, KanP attributes anonymous hymn stanza on f. 34' of ModE M.1.11 to Brebis, and anonymous hymn stanza on f. 37' of ModE M.1.12 to Martini. Some or all of remaining anonymous pieces may also be by Brebis or Martini. 2 choirbooks containing music for two choruses - MS a.M.1.11 ("Primo Coro"): i + 116 + i parchment folios, 560 x 375-90. New pencil foliation, I + 1-116 + I. Blank staves only on ff. 1, 36, 43-46, 49'-50, 114'-115'. Borders or initials cut out on ff. 1', 41', 101'. MS a.M.1.12 ("Secondo Coro"): i + 101 + i parchment folios, 560 x 380-5. New pencil foliation, 1-101. Blank staves only on ff. 1, 36, 101'. Borders cut away on f. 1 ; 14 folios cut out between ff. 37/38 (stubs remain). Both books have identical covers of leather over boards, with inscription "Liber Choralis" stamped in gold on spine; these may date from 19th century, or may be 19th-century restorations of original covers. (Similar covers also found on ModE M.1.2, ModE M.1.13, and ModE X.1.11). No index. The scribe was Fra Philippo di San Giorgio, whose activity as a copyist at the Este court in Ferrara is documented in payment records; Fra Philippo also copied ModE M.1.13 (LockF). Staff height 28. Illuminated initials in gold, purple, red, blue, and green, with filigree work and foliage designs; decoration similar to ModE M.1.2 and ModE M.1.13. Repertory for Lent and Holy Week. 1481 (LockF). Copied in Ferrara, for use at the ducal court of Ercole I d'Este (reigned 1471-1505). Este family library transferred from Ferrara to Modena in 1598; joined to Modena university library in 1892.
