General Description

Contains the works of Guillaume de Machaut, though the peculiar order and the various mistakes in both music and text suggest that it was not put together according to the master's directions. Copied by two scribes:: A (fol. 1 - 58; 107-129); B (fol. 61-106; 131-238; index). Presumably mentioned in the duke of Berry's inventory of 1402, it was then entered the library of the dukes of Burgundy between 1420 and 1467 (folios A-F contain an ex libris of John, duke of Berry). It appears in Brussels inventories from 1487 to the end of the 18th century, coming to Paris in 1794. The polyphonic compositions in Pn 9221 amount to 4 lays, 22 motets, 41 Ballades, 19 Rondeaux, 4 Virelais and the mass. The 7 polyphonic works from the Voir Dit here appear in the body of the text of this long poem, while they are usually only present in the music fascicle of the complete manuscripts. In this case two compositions appear there as well. The use of accidentals also conflicts with the other main sources in many cases. Written in 3 columns.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A parchment manuscript dated c. 1400 and measuring 410 x 308 mm. It contains 2 unnumbered paper folios belonging to the 17th-18th century binding + 2 blank unnumbered parchment folios + folios A-F + 238 folios. The latter form the ms corpus and are numbered in an old red foliation at t.r.r. Folios A-F contain an ex libris of John, duke of Berry, together with an index contemporary with the ms corpus. This very neat codex is written in 3 columns with blue-red or red-blue initials, occasionally ornamented with gold. Miniatures are frequent. The binding of mottled leather over pulp boards has gold tooling and the royal emblem in gold on the front and back covers. The notation is of Ars Nova type. Pn 9221 66 employs mensuration signs instead of the red notes usual in other sources. The music is mainly written in continous lines of 10 red five-line staves per page. In the letters of the Voir Dit, there is an interesting change of script to the more personal type of hand which becomes popular in the 15th century. The contents of this codex are the works of Guillaume de Machaut, but the peculiar order and the frequent mistakes in music and text lead to the conclusion that it was not put together according to the master's directions. Outwardly, however, the manuscript is particularly splendid. Presumably this is the codex mentioned in the duke of Berry's inventory of 1402. Apparently it then entered the library of the dukes of Burgundy between 1420 and 1467.
