General Description

The main scribe (ff. 1-86) was probably Ludwig Senfl (BenteNW); a second scribe (identified by Birkendorf as Lucas Wagenrieder) copied ff. 86'-101; third scribe added three pieces on ff. 101'-104. Texts usually copied separately on rectos, following tenor or vagans part.

Earliest layer (ff. 1-86) probably copied in Augsburg or Innsbruck, for use by the imperial court chapel of Maximilian I (1459-1519). Probably taken to Munich by Ludwig Senfl c. 1523, when he began serving at the court chapel of Wilhelm IV, Duke of Bavaria (1493-1550). At Munich, additional pieces copied, fascicles assembled in present order, and volume bound in present covers; placed in ducal court library, whose holdings formed foundation of present Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
