A Bassus Cantoris partbook from a set originally of eight volumes. Copied for the choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. Items 1-68 represent the original layer, copied by Zacharie Irishe in c. 1643-4. In three sections: (a) services (items 1-28); (b) verse anthems (29-53); and (c) full anthems (54-68). Items 101-127 are anthems copied by Edward Lowe probably in the 1660s (item 121 is attributed to 'Mr Christopher Gibbons', and was therefore presumably copied before 1664, the year in which Gibbons was awarded his Oxford D. Mus). Lowe also emended item 7, replacing pages that had originally been copied by Irishe and were now damaged. Items 201-294 were copied by other scribes during the Aldrich era (i.e. from the late 17th century to c. 1710). Items 301-348 were copied from c. 1710 onwards. See Milsom for full details.
