General Description

A Bassus partbook from a set originally of four volumes. Copied in Basel. Probably compiled by Ambrosius Kettenacker, of Winterthur, who matriculated at University of Basel in 1508 (KmetzH). Kettenacker gave manuscript in 1510 to the Basel lawyer and humanist Bonifacius Amerbach (1495-1562), who is named on the cover. Acquired by present library from Amerbach estate c. 1661.

Binding

Manuscript has been rebound in a new grey cardboard cover, but the original paper covers have been preserved as new f. 1 and f. 20. On the back of the original paper cover: 'Ambrosius Ketenacker Dono dedit Bonifacio Amerbachis Basiliensi hos libellulos Anno MDXX (?). Cantionatia quatuor.' Another hand has added: 'Dem ersamen und waisen maister Johann Kotter.'

1 paper partbook (B-iii + 20 + iii folios), ca. 111 x 160 (size of some folios varies). New pencil foliation; new pencil numbering of pieces, 1-28. Manuscript has been rebound in a new gray cardboard cover, but the original paper covers have been preserved. On the back of the original paper cover: "Ambrosius Ketenacker Dono dedit Bonifacio Amerbachis Basiliensi hos libellulos Anno MDXX (?). Cantionatia quatuor." Another hand has added: "Dem ersamen und waisen maister Johann Kotter."

First half of 16th century. Bonifacius Amerbach (1495-1562) was a prominent citizen of Basel, professor at the University of Basel, and a member of the city council.

1 paper partbook of an original 4 (B-iii + 20 + iii folios), ca. 111 x 160. Modern pencil foliation, 1-20. Modern pencil numbering of pieces, 1-28. Blank folios, or blank staves only: 1', 13'-20. Rebound ca. 1970 in modern cloth case binding, but original paper covers now preserved as new f. 1 and f. 20, respectively. No index. Copied by a single scribe, probably Ambrosius Kettenacker (see below). Staff height 17. Inked Gothic initials. Watermark generally resembles Briquet #13015-6 (KmetzH).

Acquired by present library from Amerbach estate ca. 1661.
